wishing to the stars for so long

For once in his life, he finally swallowed his concerns and hopped the fence. Too bad he had glanced back just before doing so, taking note of the look of concern that Todd gave him while quietly watching from where the old dog laid on the wooden porch. The tortoiseshell carefully traveled through the remains of the city, pushing through what he assumed was the housefolk's territory marker as the scent of smog and rubbish soon began to fade. As he padded through the growing grass, he began to notice the differences in scents. The air cleared out, and, for once, he could smell the grass beneath his paws and the flowers dotting the ground. It was... odd... Yet, he liked it.

The tomcat continued on to the point where he was afraid he was lost. Dark ears swiveled back and forth as dark green eyes darted around for some sort of bearing of where he was. He spotted a building off in the distance, and, in a wave of confusion, he made a dash for the building. He began to slow as soon as his mind started working again, and he crouched down while approaching the unknown building. A barn? Yes, yes, a barn. This barn, however, looked like it had seen better days. He crept around the barn, sniffing at this and that. He noticed the familiar scent of ashes, though these were stale. Must have caught fire long ago...

His head perked up, eyes scanning the area once more.

Sprinter
Sprinter blinked once, standing at the edge of the forest, near the old barn. For the past few weeks since she'd discovered it, she'd been coming out there to hunt for mice. Although there weren't many hiding places, some of the mice were quite the little troopers. It was rather disappointing to find another cat there, and as he was crouched down, she suspected he might be on the lookout for the small rodents. There were only so many to go around; She might end up needing to find another place to hunt. On closer examination, however, she saw that the cat likely wasn't hunting. Something about the way she, as Sprinter was assuming it was a girl, held herself was in the way of exploring. As though this was new to them. An owned cat- Kitty pet, whatever- which was unlikely a threat.
Because of that, Sprinter could continue her hunting. She crouched low, swiveling her ears to try and pick up a sound of tiny feet. Top floor seemed to have one, although the top floor was the level of danger. She'd almost fallen through once, after making the mistake of leaping at a mouse with all her weight. She laughed inwardly, remembering the splinter she'd gotten, as her sort of prize for stupidity. As quietly as she could, she went up the stairs, being careful on the third step up. That one always seemed to creak, and sure enough, it did a little. The mice sound stopped, probably frozen in fear. Oh for Sirs' sake... She tried to be quicker with the next few steps, reaching the top in a few seconds. A few seconds too late, perhaps. Smelling the air, she tried to pin-point the mouse. Sprinter circled the room, wondering if she could hear the heartbeat if she got close enough. A faint bum-bump sounded like it was coming from behind a metal bucket, well rusted from age and the missing boards. Going by instinct, she lunged at the rodent, having it in her claws within seconds. It gave a final squeak before it's life came to a sudden end. Pleased with her catch, she started towards the stairs to bring it back to her makeshift home.

wishing to the stars for so long

He was not alone. That much he could tell. His ears perked before swiveling about, listening to the sounds around him: the chirping of birds, the scuttling of mice, and... There was a creak. Tri-colored fur began to prickle at the noise, and his muscles grew rigid. Despite the fear that pulsed through his veins and knotted his stomach, he could not deny the overbearing curiosity within him. It could just be a larger animal--a threat. It could just be instability in the old, charred foundation of the barn, easily swayed by the wind--It's a still day today.. With a soft gulp, the tomcat slowly entered the barn, pulling himself through a large hole in the wall, and ignoring the tug against his pelt as he rubbed a little too close to its jagged edges.

His whiskers twitched as he crept along the edge of the barn, ducking under a fallen wooden plank. Dark green eyes peered around at his surroundings, trying to make out what he could with the rays of sunlight that filtered in through holes in the walls and roof. His paws began reaching for the first step of the stairs before a squeak echoed throughout the barn, causing the housecat to grow rigid once more. He chose to remain where he stood, crouched down, eyes wide as he looked up the rickety staircase. Dangerous, would probably cave in if too much weight is put on it... Ah, wait, there was another cat... Carrying a mouse in their jaws.

I take it back. The outside world is not fascinating in the slightest. I should go back home where there's safety, my litter box, and Fancy Feast.

Sprinter crept down the rickety steps, wondering how she could have possibly missed the sound of the Kitty Pet leaving. She had been focused on the mouse, of course, but she doubted the cat would've known enough to keep quiet. She turned in a tight circle, trying to see if the cat was just hiding... Her ears couldn't tell her enough; perhaps the kitty wasn't scared, or had really left. Either way, it was nothing of her concern. She'd already crossed off the idea that the cat was a threat in her head, a short while ago. Dusty sunlight beams fell across the floor. The feeling of being watched made her uneasy, but she dipped out of the barn through a hole near the floor. Hopefully her judgment had been correct about there being no threat. She was rarely wrong, but when she was Sprinter tended to crash and burn.
Once in the surrounding grass, she set down the mouse. Her stomach growled, impatient at being fed. There had been no food yesterday, as a result of noisy trail hikers. They normally didn't come that far out, but they had, and scared off all the prey. Sprinter had been left with nothing to catch, and because she didn't store food, there was nothing to have. Focusing on the pitiful mouse, she ate heartily. It was always a satisfaction; eating something you had caught yourself. It made her feel more independent, as she could remember being forced to sit and wait for Sir to bring something back for her and her siblings to eat. It had been boring times, although Silvertounge teasing Oscar was entertaining in it's own way. She lifted her head above the grass, glancing back at the barn. The mouse was small, and although it would tide her over, she would need to hunt again. Maybe not at the barn, though. She still wasn't convinced the cat had just left.

wishing to the stars for so long

Green eyes watched as the unknown feline disappeared from the barn. He remained pressed against the rough wood below, ignoring the way it poked at him and tugged at his long fur. The housecat was thankful for the majority of his pelt. As long as he kept his white hidden from sight, the orange and black provided proper camouflage against the dark wood of the barn with the shadows cast by the tall walls. He waited... And waited... He waited until the sound of the other cat had faded off, judging that they were a good enough distance away. At least, he hoped they were. It was hard to tell while indoors. It was one of the reasons why he pestered his housefolk until they opened a window so he could stand on the window sill and be able to observe the outdoors without anything blocking his hearing.

Slowly, he pushed himself up, swishing the thick of his tail as his anxiety began to show. He shook himself off, quickly swiping his small, pink tongue over his chest fur, before he finally moved away from his position at the base of the stairs. He slipped towards the hole he had originally entered through, taking a sharp turn as soon as daylight hit his eyes. He kept his flank against the barn's wall, though he wished he hadn't as he felt old soot begin to rub off onto his pelt. He was going to end up getting a bath when he went home... Ah, well, it could be worse. Hopefully they don't make him wear that dreaded collar again.

Lost in his thoughts, the tomcat ended up walking head first into a pile of wooden planks propped up against the barn. He jumped back just as they clattered to the ground, causing his long fur to stand on end with his back arching. He glanced around, hoping no one had seen that, only to spot the unknown cat farther into the grass. White with black cat, huh? Oh, this isn't the time for that! He took a step back, his movements becoming sheepish and uncertain.

Decidedly, she voted to come back later, to continue her hunt. Sprinter had been about to head off, when a flicker of movement caught her attention. The brown-white-black cat slipped out of the barn. So it had just been hiding... interesting. Maybe it wasn't a kitty pet after all. The cat, although, was heading for a pile of planks that had been there who knows how long. Sprinter hesitated at calling out a warning, and the now-dubbed-obvious kitty pet smacked into them. They well to the ground rather loudly, and her ears pressed back in annoyance. The other cat got it worse, though, or at least acted as though it was worse. The strange cat jumped back with a hiss, back arching in a humorous scene. Sprinter struggled to keep a straight face, seeing his obvious shame in being spotted.
She flicked her tail, noting the sheepishness way the kitty stepped back. "So you are a kitty pet, then..." She said, in a normal speaking tone. Her expression was rather amused, glad that it had been sorted out. "Smart, though, you knew enough to hide." She continued, though, as she wanted to even out the insult. She wasn't hopelessly rude, she didn't want to cross the line between speaking the truth and just making a dungface of herself. Unless it was just from being petrified, though, she figured in her head. She didn't move forward, not particularly caring whether the cat ran off without responding or not, but she didn't feel as though she would do enough to purposefully scare the thing away.

wishing to the stars for so long

Ah! He couldn't believe he had allowed himself to do something so foolish! He almost felt like he was a kitten again, being watched and judged by others. The tomcat remained silent, flanking the barn wall once more as he tried to calm himself down. It was a horrible idea to leave the yard! His housefolk were probably worried sick after not finding him lounging around in the sunlight with the dog like he often did. He was going to end up with a collar again for sure, probably one of those that annoyingly jingle or constrict the throat too much. He didn't even know how to get back home, unless wandering around aimlessly proved to be worth his while.

Dark ears twitched at the call of the stranger as foreign terminology fell upon him. "Kittypet?" He echoed in a soft voice, prying his eyes away from the fallen boards to cast a look of confusion and curiosity towards the unknown feline. "What does that mean? ... Kittypet?" At least something good came out of this; he would be able to learn something new! Even if it was just some sort of slang used by the cats around these parts, it made him somewhat glad he hadn't backed out before his little trip had even begun. The tortoiseshell straightened up just enough to make him seem like he wasn't cowering against the wall like a kitten. He was a mature cat, for goodness sake, and he needed to act like it. "Ah... Wh-who are you? If you don't mind me asking... I'm, uh, I'm Specter." Polite conversation was the least he could do after making a complete fool of himself in front of a stranger.

PostSubject: Re: Of Smog & Ashes [open]   Of Smog & Ashes [open] EmptyFri May 15, 2015 2:26 pm

Sprinter flicked her tail, the amusement of seeing another cat mess up had begun to fade. What a shame, but perhaps if the cat was a natural at it, it would happen again. She watched a bug that was crawling up a blade of grass as she listened. It didn't seem to understand that it wouldn't reach the top; that it's weight would bend the blade and prevent that. She exhaled shortly, blowing on it. The little bug flew off. She focused back to the other cat, who had been speaking. Surprisingly, it wasn't a girl as she'd assumed. Or if it was, it sounded like a boy, and should do something about it. Perhaps they were sick. She shifted on her paws, deciding between being rude or helpful. She didn't feel like making an enemy, and for that reason Sprinter chose to answer.
"It means owned cat... the Clan kitties like to use their own lingo. Most words make little sense, but it's catchy." She explained, sort of realizing another question would be coming up based on that sentence. "Although, what I meant was that you were clumsy. My apologies." She amended, as although it could be inferred, she wanted to set that straight. She had a strange manner of speaking, adding insult to an apology or complement. It was as though she couldn't decide whether to be good or bad. As the cat inquired about a name, or who she was, Sprinter thought about how to answer that. Or more, whether or not to. Her judgment from earlier remained, though, that a Kittypet would do no harm. "I'm Sprinter, a Rouge around these parts." She answered, adding in the Rouge part just to keep away the assumption that she was owned. She had a strong distaste of humans.

wishing to the stars for so long

A cat who is owned? By the housefolk? At least, that's what he assumed she meant. He would absolutely hate it if he was owned by another animal. Either way, it could be considered slavery since the housefolk often loved seeing their pets do tricks, and... Well, he would rather not think about what he would be forced to do if he was owned by another animal. He would probably get beaten or eaten. I said I wasn't going to think about it. The tortoiseshell shook his pelt, glancing about before slowly creeping away from the barn exterior. He paused just past the fallen planks, deciding he had gone close enough.

"We usually just prefer housecat... Or just cat, considering that is what we all are in the end." With a flick of the tail and a twitch of the whiskers, he fell silent while watching the white and black she-cat. The comment about his clumsiness did not seem to bother the tom too much. He understood his own weaknesses, and he definitely understood that he often made a fool of himself if he tried walking while lost in his thoughts. He should really probably work on that sometime... But, that time was not right now. "Well... Sprinter," Odd, she was named after an action. Though, it was considered an occupation of sorts in housefolk terms. "It is a pleasure to meet you," He dipped his head slightly in greeting, almost acting as if he hadn't recently made a complete embarrassment of himself. He would have to put it behind him and act as if it never happened if he wanted to forget about it.

"I do have... another question." He gave a slight pause as he sat down, curling his fluffy orange and black tail around himself and tilting his head in curiosity. His dark ears remained perk, only giving a slight twitch whenever the distant birds chirped and crowed. "What is a clan?"

Of Smog & Ashes [open] Empty
PostSubject: Re: Of Smog & Ashes [open]   Of Smog & Ashes [open] EmptyFri May 15, 2015 3:01 pm

Sprinter's ears flicked in slight annoyance, hearing him explain that they preferred to be called a housecat, or cat. It wasn't about preference, it was about their wimpiness. Clan cats tended to hold themselves above others, who couldn't survive like they did. She decided not to comment on that, though. She had nothing to complement on, and being judged as rude was never good. There was no point in it, unless looking to make an enemy. As a cat who lived alone with only the protection of some cats not being good at climbing trees, she didn't need the stress of knowing someone hated her. Then again, it was good to have a common enemy, someone you could hate as a group. It actually would bring others together. Who says hate is a bad thing. She dipped her head in response to his greeting. "You as well, Specter." The name was similar to her own, although if she remembered correctly, it was a human one. Maybe the humans were dim enough to think that the tom was a human.
At the other question, she laughed once. She'd been expecting that question, although the answer was tricky. "As a short answer, it's a group of wild cats that live together. Working as a team to survive." Her mind was racing though, and she figured to add the details. Because with just that, it sounded like a perfect life. Truthfully, she didn't believe that. Herself, she would hate to join one. "There are four around here, I believe. They take a word, such as Squirrel, and add Clan to the end of it. SquirrelClan is the only one I've actually spoken with before, although I've seen some cats from other Clans about." She decided against speaking about the whole kit-paw-star thing. At least, for now. It was a lot of information. There was more to speak of, though, and she lowered her tone, indicating that the sentence wasn't to be taken lightly. "Sometimes, they'll fight each other. Over territory, trespassing, prey, and general disputes. When this happens, more often than not cats will die. There's no humans, the ones they call two-leggeds, around here. If a cat gets hurt, and the medicine cat cannot heal them, they're off to "Star Clan". Although they could be saved, possibly, if running back to their humans, they won't. It's a thing of honor, to not become scared and leave." She closed her mouth decidedly, focusing back on the other cat. She could've kept speaking, there was so much to talk about, but she doubted a life of adventure was anything of interest to a kittypet. They had their soft beds, from what Oscar had told her very fine foods, and a life of leisure. "It's a very complicated thing." She said finally, swatting at a bee with her paw.
